When Michael Schindhelm arrived in Dubai in the spring of 2007 as the new cultural director of Dubai’s culture and arts authority, he anticipated a “bay of paradise” with abundant artistic and theatrical opportunities.
Coming from the Berlin Opera Foundation and its shrinking budget, Michael was to spearhead development of a sparkling multiplex opera house and museum of world cultures. The idea was to build Dubai’s identity as a center for music, theater, art and culture – all flourishing with local participation.
But what he found was a city in overdrive, with little agreement on what “culture” is. His project dissolved like a mirage when the recession hit and Dubai’s unprecedented growth ran out of gas. Michael Schindhelm left Dubai in the summer of 2009 and wrote about his experience in Dubai Speed, a book which comes out in English later this year.

Guten Tag, Herr Schindhelm,
